Antioxidant properties & other benefits from a cup of Joe
After a rough 2o2o, many believe staying healthy is the new luxury focus of 2021 – and coffee can play a small part.
Over the last two centuries, few substances have been studied as widely as coffee and the vast majority of clinical testing shows many very positive health benefits associated with drinking coffee. In fact, the latest studies have discredited some popular old beliefs; that in reasonable amounts, coffee does not disturb sleep, nor is it detrimental to heart-health.
Coffee has a very high antioxidant content and has been considered the greatest source of antioxidants in the U.S. diet according to University of Scranton professor Dr. Joe Vinson. Antioxidants have been widely linked to a number of potential health benefits including protection against heart disease and cancer. More studies have strongly linked coffee drinking to lowering the risk of colorectal and liver cancers, asthma, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.
Of course many coffee drinkers simply enjoy it because caffeine is a well-known mild stimulant of the nervous system and its consumption elevates neural activity in the brain. Many studies have shown it to enhance cognitive performance and increase the body’s capacity for exercise and physical endurance.
While coffee can sometimes give headaches to some people, caffeine has also been shown to help relieve headaches and to boost the action of painkillers by 40%, which is why it can be found in some medications.
A lot of the health benefits have to do with how you drink your coffee. That cappuccino or mocha latte are often loaded with calories. A recent study conducted by Italian scientists, concluded drinking espresso makes you less likely to die early.
In the study, published in the Journal of Nutrition, researchers found a link between drinking “Italian-style coffee” (a short black) and “lower risks of all-cause and, specifically, of [cardiovascular disease] mortality.”
For many people, the simple enjoyment of sipping a good cup of coffee will make their day… and life, that much better.
